Microsoft Windows - Device not functioning error when running ipconfig

The following error occurs when attempting to run ipconfig:

Windows IP Configuration
An internal error occurred: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.
Additional information: Unknown media status code.

The problem is caused by a driver for an Intel wired network adapter.

The issue is known to be in versions 8 and up of drivers for some Intel wired network adapters drivers; e.g., Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile wired network adapter in the ThinkPad T51, including the latest driver 8.10.3.0 (20/08/2008).

The problem doesn't exist in driver versions 7 and below.

The recommended work-around is to stay with driver 7.2.17.101 (10/26/2004).
